Wisconsin Business World and ITU AbsorbTech Announce Student Essay Contest Winners

MADISON – Wisconsin Business World, an affiliate of WMC Foundation, announced three winners of its biannual Essay Contest, sponsored by ITU AbsorbTech. Wisconsin Business World hosts numerous student competitions throughout the year structured around the theme, “Business is a Force for Good.”

“We strive to create opportunities for students to learn about and engage with Wisconsin businesses,” said Senior Director of Wisconsin Business World Michelle Grajkowski. “Our businesses create unique and needed products, provide excellent careers, contribute to their communities and influence our state’s economy. This essay contest pushes students to explore what’s right in their backyard. We were so impressed with each of the entries. Congratulations to Simone, Jonathan and Caleb!”

In an essay of under 1,000 words, students were asked to describe a Wisconsin-based company, their product or service, and why they are a ‘Force for Good.’ Students described how the company of their choice supports their employees, families, and communities.

The winners of Wisconsin Business World’s Essay Contest:

Simone Burnett – 11th Grade – Reedsburg Area High School

Jonathan Lee – 11th Grade – Nicolet High School

Caleb Wier – 12th Grade – Craig High School

Winning entries highlighted Racine-based O & H Danish Bakery, Milwaukee-based Miller Brewing Company, and Minong-based Jack Link’s. Burnett, Lee and Wier each received a cash prize of $500.

“Companies are more than the products and services they provide, and this essay prompt is a great way for students to better see the full scope of community and economic impact local businesses have,” said ITU AbsorbTech President & CEO Jim Leef. “We also love this contest because it highlights the great career opportunities here in our state. Thank you to all of the students who wrote essays and the teachers who partnered with us, and congratulations to the winners!”
